Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
On p.180 of Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Arnold explains how everyone ( with the exception of his parents, grandmother, and Eugene) on the reservation expects him to be unsuccessful in everything he does. At Reardon, Everyone expects him to succeed and be great at everything. The coach, Roger, Penelope, Gordy and the rest of the basketball team helped him to gain a new found confidence. They even stood up for him when a teacher gave him a hard time for missing class due to so many funerals. This showed him they not only cared for him, but would also fight for him if needs be.

Good points and observations. I think having people believe in him and expect something from him made a big difference when it came to Arnold's self-confidence.
