This cartoon in the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie shows Arnold trying to deny the fact that he is poor. He is so ashamed of being poor that he tries to play it off like he's rich. Roger and Penelope find out that he is in fact poor, but they don't look at him in a bad way like he thought they would. They were actually good friends to him and tried to help him in whatever way they could. It is sad that he would have to walk all the way back to the reservation most of the time, and even the thought of him walking at 3am is just heartbreaking. No child should have to endure that.
I agree that no child should endure that.
